What freedom means to me

For me, freedom is about two things – being able to decide and being able to do.

That means having the capability to think and the capability to act.

The decide part has two elements – first thinking about the options available to you, then choosing one.

The doing part is about having resources available to act with.

Essentially it’s about getting up in the morning and deciding what you want to do that day. Or as Marx put it, living in a society where it’s “possible for me to do one thing today and another tomorrow, to hunt in the morning, fish in the afternoon, rear cattle in the evening, criticise after dinner, just as I have a mind”.
